The 59-year-old former magician’s assistant couldn’t contain her giggles live on air today when she was joined by two sculptors from the Oxford Sculptors Group: Martin Lorenz and John Nicholls.
The artists are two of 27 who are showcasing work at a huge outdoor exhibition the group has put on at Greys Court near Henley-on-Thames in partnership with the National Trust.
Keen to get an idea of what will be on show, Debbie McGee quizzed Martin about the exhibition.
“There are seven fish, 21 animals, 17 birds, 19 abstracts, six flowers, four torsos, 50 people, three heads, one sort of object and two insects,” he reeled off.
“It should total up to 154 items all together.”
When asked what pieces he had on show, Martin replied: “I’ve done a fish, I’ve done a dog’s head, I’ve done some naked ladies again.”
“You’re always doing those naked ladies, aren’t you?” Debbie teased.
“Well, I’m trying very hard not to lose my memory,” the sculptor quipped cheekily.
Falling about laughing, the radio host could be heard battling to regain her composure before soldiering on with the interview.
“I was just talking to my producer and I said about the lovely naked lady sculpture that Paul [Daniels] bought from one of your exhibitions, it’s in my lounge,” she said. “And saying that for years we kept asking you, ‘Who is it?’
“Because your model must have been someone in the village,” she giggled. “But you would never disclose who it was.”
Later in the show, Debbie got on to the subject of Strictly Come Dancing professional dancer Giovanni, 27.
“My dance partner Giovanni, he’s on tour at the moment,” she told listeners. “In fact, he’s just got off a cruise ship.
“But he’s back on his tour this week and it’s coming to The Hexagon in Reading on July 5.
“I can tell you it’s a great show but also I’m going to be dancing a dance with him when he comes to Reading,” she announced. “It’s really special because on his whole tour of, I think he’s got 50-something dates he’s doing, there are two shows which I’m going to perform in.
“I’ve done one in London,” Debbie explained.
She went on to recall how Giovanni had messaged her to check she would still be making a special appearance with him on stage for the show.
“He actually messaged me yesterday to say, ‘Darling, are you still going to be dancing in my show at Reading?’” she said, imitating his Italian accent.
“So yes, I am. I hope some of you will come along and I look forward to seeing you there.”
Debbie and Giovanni made it all the way to the Strictly final together last year and were just pipped to the post by Joe McFadden and his partner Katya Jones who scooped the coveted Glitterball trophy.
